AMDAHL ARTICLES
**************************************************************
328.
** AMDAHL EXPECTS FIRST-QUARTER LOSS
(EN, 3/29/93, pg. 6)
While it declined to estimate the size of the loss, the company said it will be
substantially larger than analysts' estimates and that revenues will be
considerably lower than expectations.

DEC ARTICLES
**************************************************************
329.
** DEC, INTEL CANCEL OUT MPP DEAL
(EN, 3/29/93, pg. 1)
An agreement signed last August for DEC to resell Intel's i860 based massively
parallel processors (MPPs) was terminated by the firms after a DEC
reorganization. DEC said it did not see any demand for the high end device.
330.
** DEC SALES FORCE TO MARKET MACS
(CW, 3/29/93, pg. 20)
DEC issued a new version of Pathworks for the Macintosh and an agreement to
sell and market Apple platforms in the U.S. The sale of Apple platforms by
DEC is part of the company's push into the systems integration market.

HITACHI ARTICLES
**************************************************************
331.
** HITACHI DATA SYSTEMS TO SHIP 13 GX SERIES MAINFRAMES
(CW, 3/29/93, pg. 77)
There are now 26 models in HDS' GX series of IBM-compatible mainframes.
They range in power from 18 million instructions per second (MIPS) to 390
MIPS and include and eight-way processor. HDS will announce on April 6 a
far reaching open systems strategy that will start with a mainframe that runs
the OSF/1 version of Unix and will extend to Unix workstations and Unix
supercomputers.

HP ARTICLES
**************************************************************
332.
** QUOTE OF THE WEEK
(IW, 3/2/93, pg. 10)
" The only way we could come together is the threat of NT." - Willem P.
Roelandts, VP of HP's computer systems organization, on a multivendor effort
to unite their incompatible Unix products around a desktop standard.
333.
** OPENVIEW MANAGER OUTSHINES SUN
(CMW, 3/22/93, pg. 55)
HP's SNMP system, OpenView, takes the lead in five of six categories. HP's
superiority over Sun includes: basic features, advanced features, user
interface, platform and overall score. Sun scored higher in performance.
[ Editors note: Great comparison of HP, Sun and Wollongong's SNMP
systems.]
334.
** HP PRODUCT DELAYS TRY USER PATIENCE
(CW, 3/29/93, pg. 7)
The HP juggernaut has hit a few potholes while rolling down the mainframe
downsizing road: A spate of product and ordering delays have in some cases
forced users to switch vendors. Shipment slowdowns are affecting a swath of
product types ranging from minicomputers to workstations to disk drives.
Users said HP has attributed some of the delays to chip problems, and they also
noted that HP's ordering process has bogged down in part because its order
form are confusing.
335.
** UNIX AWARDS PRESENTED AT UNIFORUM
(CW, 3/29/93, pg. 68)
Business commitment vendor awards were received by: HP, Wim Roelandts;
SCO, Doug Michels; and Sun, Scott McNealy.
336.
** STANDARDIZATION BUOYS OPEN SYSTEMS
(CW, 3/29/93, pg. 78)
The challenge for Chesebrough-Ponds was to downsize the 74 major
applications that run on its mainframe onto open systems platforms. The
technology chosen was CA-Unicenter for Unix on HP 9000's. Results include
increased service levels, energy reductions and quality improvements.
[ Editors note: Good downsizing article for HP.]
**************************************************************
IBM ARTICLES
**************************************************************
337.
** IBM JAPAN BEGINS TO SHOW SYMPTOMS OF PARENT'S ILLNESS
(WSJ, 3/29/93, pg. B4)
IBM Japan's pretax profit sank 74% last year, largely because of weak orders
for mainframe computers. But the IBM unit insists that things won't get much
worse, citing its shift in emphasis to software and services.
338.
** FAITH IN A STRANGER - AS AN OUTSIDER AND NON-TECHIE,
LOU GERSTNER BREAKS THE MOLD
(BW, 4/5/93, pg. 19)
Louis Gerstner Jr. is the next chief executive of IBM. He is 51 and currently
is Chairman and CEO, of RJR Nabisco. Prior experience includes President,
American Express, and Director, McKinsey. If his record at AmEx and RJR is a
guide, he will have little trouble slashing IBM's payroll.
**************************************************************
MICROSOFT ARTICLES
**************************************************************
339.
** NT CHARTER
(IW, 3/22/93, pg. 16)
While it's known that Microsoft plans to add a telephony interface to Windows
NT by year's end, the new application program interface will also help position
Windows NT as an environment for personal digital assistants and as a
competitor to the telephone.
340.
** UNIX WAR MAY END VIA ANTI-NT ALLIANCE
(EN, 3/22/93, pg. 1)
The alliance of IBM, HP, Sun, USL, and SCO has agreed on a common set of
specifications for a desktop Unix environment. Conspicuously missing from
the group was DEC. Specific code modules chosen for the common desktop
environment include major elements from HP's Visual User Environment.
341.
** COMMENTS
(BG, 3/17/93, pg. 8)
Microsoft says NT takes no more sill to navigate around than Window 3.1. In
line with its expectations that NT will deliver a new crop of customers, it's
starting to be adamant that NT is not an upgrade. However, they expect 20% of
the current Windows 3.1 market to move to NT.
341.
** COMMENTS
(BG, 3/17/93, pg. 8)
Business Week has hung the tag "Big Green" on Microsoft, an allusion to its
wooded campus and the money machine in its basement. With 55,000
developer kits out, Microsoft says that if NT were a Unix product, it would be
the year's sixth best-seller.
**************************************************************
NCR ARTICLES
**************************************************************
342.
** NCR's RAPID RESPONSE UNIT
(UGX, 3/29/93, pg. 2)
NCR announced its Client Server Rapid Implementation program, a consulting
service that develops Unix-based client-server computing prototypes for
customer in less than 60 days.
343.
** NCR TOP POSTS SEE CHANGING OF THE GUARD
(CW, 3/29/93, pg. 2)
NCR announced that Williamson, chairman and CEO will retire May 1.
Analysts said the change in leadership reflects a strategic shift to place
more focus on integrating AT&T's communications savvy with the $7.1 billion
subsidiary's computing capabilities in a bid to foster further development in
areas such as multimedia.
**************************************************************
SGI ARTICLES
**************************************************************
344.
** SUPERCOMPUTER SOFTWARE AVAILABLE FOR WORKSTATIONS
(WSJ, 326/93, P6)
Cray Research is making one of its supercomputer software programs available
for use on workstations, a first for the supercomputer manufacturer. A version
of its UniChem molecular modeling program can now be used on SGI
workstations.
345.
** SGI CLOSED OUT UNTIL OPENGL GOES UP
(BG, 3/17/93, pg. 7)
SGI, now Mips parent, finds itself unable to use the OS technology its chip
subsidiary is so dependent on. SGI is not porting to NT because SGI is so
heavily graphical, it needs its OpenGL libraries in NT. Microsoft and SGI are
said to be working closely on getting OpenGL in NT but it certainly won't be in
the first release.
**************************************************************
SUN ARTICLES
**************************************************************
346.
** SUN TO DESIGN SOLARIS VERSIONS FOR VARIOUS PCs
(WSJ, 3/30/93, pg. B6)
Sun, challenging Microsoft in seeking to become a major software supplier, will
develop a version of its operating system software for a computer being
developed by Apple, IBM and Motorola.
347.
** NEW SUN UNIT TO PEDDLE CPU, SYSTEM DESIGNS
(UGX, 3/29/93, pg. 1)
Looking to get more serious in its efforts to encourage a real Sparc compatible
community, Sun will open a new business unit that will license the silicon and
system designs of its next generation, 64 bit UltraSparc, SuperSparc+ and
MicroSparc.
348.
** ..45MHz, 50MHz SPARCSTATIONS, EIGHT-WAY SUNBOX
ANTICIPATED
(UGX, 3/29/93, pg. 1)
Expectations are rising that Sun will soon announce its anticipated 45MHz
Model 52 and 54, set to be dual and quad machines. There is also talk of an
eight-way desktop/deskside called SunBox again touted for the second calendar
quarter.
349.
** CLIENT-SERVER
(IW, 3/22/93, pg. 8)
Sun will outsource its mainframe data processing to Computer Sciences Corp.
in a $27 million multiyear contract. The agreement will free Sun to convert its
manufacturing systems to client-server architecture. After developing MRPII
software for the new worldwide client-server network, Sun and CSC will jointly
market the product.

350.
** RATING IT AT 112 MIPS
(UGX, 3/29/93, pg. 3)
Intel rates the 66 MHz version of the Pentium chip at 112 MIPS. It will execute
two instructions per cycle, one for each of its parallel arithmetic-logic units,
two five-stage execution units, and is five times more powerful than the
original 80486 microprocessor and over 300 times faster than the 8088.
351.
** TECHNOLOGY BUYING GOES TO EXTREMES
(IW, 3/22/93, pg. 48)
The greatest planned increases in IS spending come from companies reporting
profits that represent less than 1% of revenue and companies with profits
totaling more than 20% of revenue. Profitable companies, believing that their
past investments in IT have greatly helped their bottom line, continue to spend
liberally. Companies with low profits, meanwhile, hope that greater
investments in technology will help pull them out of their slump.
